The MacBook Neo will create an Apple craze among college and university students

It’s just the beginning

The MacBook Neo seemed pointless when Apple launched it because the idea of a MacBook that cannot handle heavy editing and advanced coding is not ideal. Traditionally, MacBooks have been associated with powerful performance, particularly for creative professionals, developers and designers who rely on high-end processing capabilities. Because of this reputation, many people initially questioned the purpose of the Neo. Despite these early concerns, the Neo’s cool features make it appealing, and the price point even puts things into context. The Neo is a cool laptop, and its design makes it especially attractive to a younger market. Apple clearly designed the device with students and casual users in mind, rather than professionals who require extremely powerful machines.

The idea of owning a Neo as a college or university student will likely make your friends envy you to the point that showing it off almost becomes part of the appeal. Apple products have always had a certain social prestige attached to them, and the Neo continues that tradition. Its sleek appearance, lightweight design and modern colour options create a device that feels both stylish and practical. For younger consumers, technology is not only about functionality but also about identity and lifestyle, and the Neo fits perfectly within that cultural space.

The Neo will also encourage many people to swap their basic iPad for this machine. The basic iPad already offers features that are somewhat similar to the Neo, particularly for tasks such as note-taking, browsing the internet and watching media. However, the key difference is that consumers will receive a full computer experience with the Neo without having to purchase a third-party keyboard to transform their iPad into a more functional laptop. This convenience could make the Neo a much more attractive option for students who want a single device that can handle both entertainment and academic tasks.

The price point gives the Neo a significant advantage over many of its competitors and positions Apple to reclaim some of the market share that companies like HP and Lenovo have dominated for years with their entry-level laptops. These laptops often run on Intel i3 processors and basic Windows operating systems, which are designed primarily for simple productivity tasks. Although the Neo runs on the A-chip used for the iPhone 16, it is still considered to be more powerful than many Windows entry-level laptops in everyday performance. Apple’s software optimisation plays a major role here. The Apple operating system enables the Neo to perform smoothly and efficiently, even without the more powerful chips found in higher-end MacBooks. This software and hardware integration gives Apple an important competitive edge in an already saturated market.

However, there is still one noticeable drawback. At the £699 price point, many consumers might have expected the Neo to include the M1 chip rather than relying on the mobile-based processor and a fingerprint scanner. Including the M1 could have made the device significantly more powerful and would have removed many of the early criticisms regarding performance limitations.

The colour scheme of the Neo brings out the stylish features that Apple always aims to create with its products. Apple has consistently emphasised design as a major selling point, and the Neo continues that tradition by offering a device that looks modern, minimalistic and premium. The fact that it shares a similar design language with the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro also strengthens its appeal. Consumers often associate these designs with quality and innovation, so having a more affordable device that resembles Apple’s flagship laptops can be a powerful selling point.

To truly appreciate the Neo, many people will likely need to see and use the device in person. Visiting an Apple Store to hold the Neo or test its features can give potential buyers a better understanding of how the laptop feels and performs. Apple products are often designed with tactile experience in mind, meaning that the build quality and user interface are easier to appreciate when physically interacting with the device.

Ultimately, the Neo is a must-have laptop for certain types of users, particularly students and individuals who primarily need a device for productivity tasks such as writing, research and simple design work. For example, people who use tools like Canva for creative projects will find that the Neo provides more than enough power to complete their tasks efficiently. In many ways, the Neo could eventually replace the entry-level iPad because consumers increasingly want the full package: a portable device that functions as a complete laptop rather than a tablet with accessories.
