Did we learn anything about this interview?
The 35-minute interview with GQ was meant to be a tell-all, but it didn’t feel like that. Jay was supposed to tell his truth about what has been happening since Diddy’s incarceration. This was meant to be a homecoming moment where Jay would spill the beans and tell it how it really was. However, the interview felt like a waste of time, as Jay said a lot, but ultimately didn’t say anything at all.
He spoke at length, but his words lacked substance, which left many of us in the audience questioning what was really going on and what Jay-Z truly wanted to say. I guess we will never know, because the interview didn’t reveal much. With recent allegations made against him, one of his best friends going to prison, and his name appearing in the Epstein files, much of the audience expected Jay-Z to address these issues and perhaps shed light on what may have happened. But it seems he couldn’t say much; being a billionaire comes with a certain level of caution. When you have that status, you have to be careful about how you speak; otherwise, you could be next in line.
The interview focused more on his legacy, including his recent announcement about the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt, as well as his album The Blueprint, which came out in the 2000s.
Jay-Z has always been one of those rappers who rarely gives interviews or places himself in the public eye in the way other celebrities or artists do. He has always remained reserved, even during his time at Roc-A-Fella. He was never the hype man; he was the quiet one. One thing I’ve always admired about Jay-Z is how measured he is with his words. His approach feels very corporate; he doesn’t let much slip because he understands what’s at stake.
Although he did offer a few moments of wisdom, he remained calculated throughout the interview. Many people might say that Jay-Z has a lot hidden in his closet, but we may never find out, especially if interviews like this continue to reveal so little.
The interviewer was good and clearly well-prepared. It was evident that he had done his homework on Jay-Z’s biography and catalogue, as well as his lifestyle. Viewers didn’t expect Jay to expose his billionaire friends, but they did expect him to speak more openly about certain events. Unfortunately, nothing significant was revealed, which was disappointing.
Listen, we should always judge people based on proven facts and when they have been found guilty under the law. I’m not saying Jay-Z has done the things he has been accused of, but it shouldn’t be completely ruled out either. What I can say for certain is that this interview didn’t give the audience much information or insight to truly understand its purpose.
